Ashwagandha ‘Vedic’ (Withania somnifera)
Ayurvedic, adaptogenic herb to balance hormonal systems, reduce cortisol, and improve sleep. 'Vedic' is the one most commonly used in herbal medicine, using the roots in the fall of the second year.
Evergreen or herbaceous small shrub, growing 2-3 feet tall, producing lantern-like pods enclosing the pea-sized fruits. Fruit is green at first and becomes bright red as it dries. Plant prefers full sun, and fast-draining, alkaline (pH 7.5 to 8.0) soil with moderately dry conditions. Sweeten regular garden soil with ground limestone. Germination is light dependent. Sow in early spring in plugs, average germ time 15 days. Space 1 foot apart.
